The Proms, more formally known as The BBC Proms, or The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC, is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and other events held annually, predominantly in the Royal Albert Hall in London. The BBC Proms 2012 season will run from Friday July 13th, ending on Saturday September 8th. The BBC Proms is the world’s largest classical music festival, presenting some of the world’s leading artists and orchestras, as well as a host of talks, workshops, free performances and family events. Bringing together great orchestras, ensembles, soloists and artists from across the globe, the BBC Proms presents two months of world-class classical music-making at the Royal Albert Hall. This year's BBC Proms are part of the Cultural Olympiad 2012, a four-year programme of cultural events leading up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Reflecting London's momentous year on the global stage, the 2012 BBC Proms programme is packed with world premieres, beloved classics and internationally renowned musicians. There are some music events you need to pay more attention to. Between 20 and 27 July Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra will be performing the entire Beethoven symphony cycle, culminating in a performance of the Ninth Symphony on the opening day of the Olympic Games. You can enjoy a diverse series of operas, including Glyndebourne's semi-staged version of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, Berlioz's The Trojans and ground-breaking new work Nixon in China. You can hear music from stage and screen, including a star-studded version of My Fair Lady and Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Yeoman of the Guard. You can explore chamber music at lunchtime concerts at Cadogan Hall or at many of the proms, and hear major British choral works, including Elgar's the Apostles & Howells's Hymnus Paradisi. Kylie Minogue will headline the BBC Proms in the Park event in London this autumn. The pop superstar will perform in Hyde Park on Saturday 8 September at the top of a bill that includes tenor Alfie Boe, classical quartet Il Divo and The London Community Gospel Choir. Proms in the Park, which features a mixture of popular and classical performances at the end of the Proms season, will be hosted by Sir Terry Wogan and feature music from the BBC Concert Orchestra. Meanwhile, please go behind the scenes with Proms Plus, a series of free workshops, talks and events. You can even attend singing sessions with some of the musicians! Moreover, all BBC Proms programmes are broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and many are televised on BBC TV, streamed live online via BBC iPlayer and available to listen to or watch again online for seven days.
